Product Development Methodology
Plan
Purpose
Understand
the business objectives for the project and the constraints the team must work
within.
· Identify business goals
· Define scope
· Identify critical dates
and budget constraints
· Create timeline
· Define: roles,
responsibilities and reporting relationships
· Determine project
framework
Deliverables
· Work Plan
Results
Achievable
and measurable criteria for success are established and the project management
is defined.
Discover
Purpose
Understand
the brand, the business environment, user archetypes and their goals in order
to define the correct design requirements.
· Understand business
environment (internal & external)
· Understand brand and
product(s)
· Research users /
user-types - observations, , task analysis and usability testing
· Define personas (user
motivations)
· Identify user goals
· Evaluate the current
solution
Deliverables
· Brand Assessment
· Use Goals
· Current Solution
Evaluation
Results
The
team has the necessary information to imagine the right solution for the
challenge.
Concept
Purpose
Assimilate the findings from the Discovery Phase
and envision a solution that gracefully bridges business goals with User needs.
· Articulate precise
problem to be solved
· Describe/Illustrate vision
for solution
· Create lists of design
imperatives and new features
Deliverables
· Product Brief
Results
The
strategy and vision are set to guide the subsequent design activities.
Architecture
Purpose
Identify
all of the necessary design components, define, their purpose, behavior and
properties, model their relationship to one another and arrange them into a
cohesive, logical solution.
· Create scenarios,
conceptual models and process models
· Identify/describe elements
and logic
· Create data and object models
· Illustrate framework
Deliverables
· Scenarios
· Site map
· Object model &
definition list
· Content taxonomy models
· Content matrices
· Wireframe diagrams
Results
The activities and deliverable in this phase
define the structure, meaning and behavior.
Design
Purpose
Build
on the architectural foundation to develop and test a design that achieves the
vision articulated in the Product Brief.
· Develop messages
· Develop media content
· Design prototypes
· Validate prototype with
Users
· Create detailed design
specification
Deliverables
· Conceptual Prototype
· Creative copy
· Design Spec
Results
Creative
messaging, mood, persona and style are applied to the architectural framework
and the solution is validated with key stakeholders. Further, the
specifications to implement the designs are described in detail.
Build
Purpose
The
design specs guide the production of the final, working product. Material is
produced to help transition the organization into the new business capability.
Rules and policies are documented to help understand and maintain the solution.
· Optimize assets
· Produce code
· Conduct performance
testing
· Prep final files
· Create
documentation/policies
Deliverables
· Versioned Adjustments to
Documentation and Prototypes
· Performance Test Results
· User Manuals
· Product Documentation
Results
At
the completion of this phase, the product is ready for launch and the
organization is prepared to function in the new business capability being
created by the solution.
Deploy
Purpose
Launch
the product and help the organization get the most out of the solution.
· Deploy product
· Conduct training
· Deploy business
policies/procedures
· Administer client
satisfaction survey
· Gather user feedback
· Monitor and measure
results
· Create strategies for
future enhancements
Deliverables
· Final Tested Product
· Copy of Final Documents
· Analytics
· Surveys
Results
The completion of this phase marks the point at
which the organization is up and running with their new business capability.
The solution is monitored and measured and refined.
